A Lecture is Still a Lecture …

… and a post-it is still a post-it. How is technology changing our classrooms, our schools, our lives? Is the change transformative or is it just assistive?

I’m a technology coordinator. I talk with colleagues about creativity and lifelong learning and we work together to create units and lessons that foster those habits/skills. We use wallwisher (virtual sticky notes) and some elementary students do typing practice several times a week. No, that’s not all we’re doing. We also have students doing things like creating videos using Flip cameras, creating games with Scratch and inventing items for an invention convention. Transformative uses of technology typically correlate with higher order thinking skills. Does that mean that we need to eliminate all lower order thinking skills and assistive uses of technology. I think that the answer is obviously not. I’m trying to figure out the “right” balance. If you think that you have a solution, I’d love to hear it.
