I love the idea of design for change. I love the grassroots nature of this project and the community building that happens through it. I think that it’s powerful for students and of students. I saw Kiran Sethi speak and her passion inspires. However, I’m not attracted to the contest structure and the October deadline seems limiting given the August – June calendar at my school. I don’t think that social change should be motivated by prizes and recognition. I don’t think that authentic meaningful social change has an externally imposed deadline.
I’m thinking about how to create a structure, environment, community where students are present in their communities, and actively engaged in activities to improve them. What is the synergistic relationship between technology classes and programs like Kiran Sethi’s “Design for Change” and Monika Hardy’s “Innovation Lab”?
